How To Make a "Bits & Pieces" Quilt

I started hanging my Bits & Pieces Quilt in my booth at shows.  It draws people into my booth and is a conversation piece.  It really isn't for sale and I always have people asking how I made it.  Well, I decided to do another one, and document the process.  You can look back at the December 2014 post to see more information about the original quilt I made.

I begin by sewing a collaged fabric block out of vintage linens and material.  I don't make it a specific size, but I want it to be manageable to stitch and sew.  I like to embroider sayings on some of the pieces, and I might add zippers or embellishments to hide rips or imperfections.  Here is the first block.

The next block I started working on was a linen piece with an appliqued flower.  I took a saying I love and I traced it onto the fabric with a pencil.  I am now embroidering it.

Here is an example of how to cover a rip or imperfection on a block.  (I will just added a tiny zipper)

As you can see in the picture above, I just laid one pretty linen on top of another and sewed it.  As long as you like it, that's all that matters!  You can keep layering or do some hand stitching to make it interesting.  I really recommend using quilt blocks and pieces that you love.  If you are really at a loss for how to begin, leave me a comment with your name and I will send you a starter block.   If a quilt is too much to start with, try a table cloth!  Come on....Just give it a try!

I just love this!!! I bought the chenille bolster pillow at the big heap. It looks so great on my bed :) I am going to try and to the fabric collage for a big overstuffed chair in my room. I have never upholstered before, so I may be contacting you with questions. It was great to meet you in Flag. Laura
